Chapter 2 : Arenal, Costa Rica
This was the second stop on the trip. The drive to the Tabacon Resort
in Arenal was a 4 hour drive on a 2 lane pothole covered road. On the way
we stopped by a coffee plantation and picked a couple beans for souvenirs.
We passed beautiful lake Arenal which is the second largest lake in Central
America. The Arenal Volcano is in the center of the rain forest and was
very close the the resort. There were natural hot springs that are
generated by the volcano's subterranean heat. We enjoyed the springs on
many occasions, but with sunburns from the beach the 39deg C water (over 100deg
F) didn't allow for much soaking!
We rode horses to the Fortuna waterfall about a 30 minute ride (regularly
galloping). Julie's horse was named "Margarita" Jake's was named "Feo".
Jake's horse was bucking the other horses and just had a Feo attitude to say the
least. The the water falls 200' and makes a heck of a roar. The water
there was in the low 70's F. There was a 600m trail that was nothing but
stairs, but it was all worth it.
